I know,I know that I haven't post anything for so long. I don't have any reason but...laziness.
It's December now, and I just realized that it's almost a year since we moved here. In a few weeks will be 2013.
So, what is your resolution for 2013? I don't really in to resolution thing too myself actually (and I never really keep my resolution, or remember the resolutions I've made before, ha ha!). However,resolution is a good thing to keep you in spirit in improving ourselves.
Anyway, I came across this site feedingourfamilies.org.nz and saw that they suggest us to consume meals with at least half vegetables the whole family will benefit, as the picture bellow that I took from their site.
It has 'wow'-ed me, and I think it probably good idea to implement a good portion of veggies every day. I admitted I hadn't give my family enough veggies. There's almost-always some portion of veggies on our table, but probably not good enough. Oh, and I love veggies, but I don't eat fruit well. I don't know why.
I think this portion of veggies suggestion gave me ideas of resolution: Next year I will serve more veggies and more fruits for my family, insyaAllah. I don't know how yet, but I will find a way. One of the way is probably getting the right tools.

...is a dream kitchen utensil that I could always dreamed of, but probably will never buy it. It's really expensive!!
Now after thinking of my resolution, I don't really want those mixers anymore. I mean, I don't bake cake a lot, and I start begin to think that cakes made from too much flour, and too much sugar, and too much fat... too much whatever. I made cake mostly for my sons, and sometimes for myself. Now my dream is shifted to....JUICE EXTRACTOR! That will be great to consume fruits, don't you think? But I don't know which juice extractor to dream of. Any suggestion?
Anyway, let's hope that my resolution here become reality (amiiiiin!).

Kitchen's downs
Nobody's perfect, right? I know.
It's been few weeks I've been failed in making cakes, and few kind of food too. I don't know why, any of my experiments didn't come out with any satisfaction. It probably unconsciously got in my mind, therefore about a couple weeks ago I dreamt that I made cake and my grandma and my mom(both of them had passed away) ate it. I don't think this dream has any specific meaning. I was just happy to see them in my dream; my grandma, my mom and my cake :)
Since that dream my experiments STILL not getting any better. Maybe this is what they called as 'baking blues'. Apparently it's the acute one. Usually people having this kind of blues but still can make cakes. In my case, I can't even make cake right!
Well, I never really expect my kitchen experiment to be always perfectly success, now my little family. So I just let things flow. However, it's been few weeks, I got bored looking at ugly cakes and wasted flour and eggs...and butter.. and milk.. Arrrgh!
I know I don't have to make everything, but I don't like to see my kids eating too much store-bought ready meals too.
Oh dear, I even begin too lazy to type a post.
For the sake of my sons, cooking blues please go awaaaayyyyyy!!

New Label: Natural colouring!
Hullooo hullooo!
I decided that to urge myself to be more active in this blog, I have to have a sort of project or challenge. You know, add a little ambition in blogging, eh eh eh.
So, I thought, I was quite success(I know, it's a little snob, sorry) to 'paint' some of my food to green with Suji leaves. Then, why not continue pursuing to get other colours from natural sources?
Do you think it's a good idea?
Okay, anyway.
I will keep this post updated every time I found new colour. I will also put the link on the side of my blog so anyone can check the list.
If anyone had heard or experience using natural colouring for foods, please share with me. I will embrace you with biiiiigggg HUG! ^^

dan piala bergilir itu jatuh padaku..

It's been long, I know.
Sudah dua minggu Mamah meninggalkan kami, setelah sebelumnya beliau menginap tiga minggu di ICU tanpa sadar.
Nggak perlu menanyakan apakah kami kehilangan, jawabnya tentu saja iya.
Rasanya semua kesedihan pun nggak ingin kutuliskan.
Sekarang rumah ini kehilangan 'peri rumah' lagi. Enek meninggal 5 tahun lalu. Sejak beliau meninggal sebetulnya aku masih saja merasa kehilangan. Sekarang Mamah.
Mamah, Enek dan nenek-buyutku adalah orang-orang yang dikenal bisa masak. Pintar masak. Bahkan mungkin beberapa orang menganggap mereka jago masak . Nenek buyut memang tukang masak. Enek meski bukan seorang tukang masak, tapi masakannya dan kue lapisnya bisa bikin orang terkenang-kenang. Mamah memulai kegiatan dapurnya dari suka membuat kue, lalu setelah Enek sakit, barulah beliau berusaha memasak. Usaha serta belajar memasaknya Mamah itu berkembang jadi sangat baik. Beliau juga suka menjual kue kering saat Lebaran.
Sekarang semua 'ratu dapur' itu sudah nggak ada. Meninggalkan aku yang terbengong di dapur. Ya memang aku suka membuat kue, tapi kalau soal memasak untuk orang dewasa aku belum pernah serius. Cuma suamiku saja yang 'kuracuni' dengan bento-ku yang minimalis. Anak-anak juga kuracuni dengan masakanku yang sederhana.
Kondisiku sebetulnya mirip dengan Enek dulu. Beliau adalah satu-satunya perempuan di rumahnya yang berisi laki-laki semua; abang dan adiknya. Saat ini di rumah ini semua lelaki kecuali aku. Siapa lagi yang diharapkan mengurus rumah tangga ini? Tentunya aku. Aku ingin banget bisa mengerjakan semua, seperti mereka dulu.
Aku sebetulnya sangat ingin mencoba sampai bisa masak, mengikuti jejak Mamah yang beralih dari 'perkuehan' ke 'permasakan'. Sayangnya sepertinya nggak ada yang percaya aku mau dan mampu mencoba, even my dad. Kalau mereka mengharapkan aku langsung bisa, tentu saja itu sebuah keajaiban :) But I really hope they let me try. Sebaliknya, mereka malah maunya katering makanan saja dari tukang masak :(
Ini sebetulnya agak membuatku merasa malu, karena membuatku merasa aku bahwa keturunan tukang masak yang failed. Selain itu sebetulnya aku benci dianggap nggak mampu saat aku sebetulnya baru mau mencoba.
But, while we're all still mourning, I'll try to understand and try to calm.
But I won't give up from trying to cook. I'll find a way. InsyaAllah. And I know someday I CAN COOK!

Are you laughing at me? Huh? Do you?? Do you???
Membuat kue yang satu ini bikin rambut jabrik :D
Sudah berkali-kali mencoba membuat kue bolu kukus teuteup aja nggak sukses. Bolu kukus yang sukses adalah bolu kukus yang adonan atasnya pecah hingga 3-4 patahan, sering disebut 'ketawa', serta hasilnya ringan dan lembut kalau dimakan.
Mungkin sebenarnya kalau aku nggak keukeuh membuatnya tanpa food additive bisa aja kali ya? Tapi dasar persistent, jadi tetap berusaha tanpa emulsifier, air soda maupun soda-sodaan lainnya.
Bolu kukus yang kubuat hari ini, bentuknya sudah lumayan. Aku membuatnya menggunakan 2 dandang yang berbeda di saat yang bersamaan dengan maksud agar tidak ada adonan yang menunggu. Alhasil di satu dandang mereka tertawa pecah tiga, sedangkan di dandang lain cuma ketawa satu belah saja. Grrr...
Pas dimakan pun enak pas hangat saja. Setelah kuenya dingin, alamak, jadi berat dan keras. Huhuhu...
Apakah aku harus menyerah dengan food additive kali ini?
Hik.. Hik... Hik....
Lihat nih, bolunya ketawa sih ketawa, tapi kayanya mereka ngetawain aku ya??

hmm.. tapi rasanya aku harus menampilkan foto-foto mereka yang sukses ketawa lebih lebar meskipun teksturnya nggak airy. Jadi mungkin sebenarnya ada harapan untuk membuat bolu kukus ini lebih baik lagi.

What Food Colours MIGHT Do to Our Children
If you're still not sure about my post about food colouring and other additives, I coincidently(when I was browsing for home interior article) found this article about food colouring. It says that food colouring can make children hyper.
You may read it completely here.
I don't say NEVER use food colouring. But, I think it'll be wise if we, as parent, limiting the usage of the synthetic food colour in our children's food. After all, the taste is more important than the look, isn't it? ;)
P.S: Besides, my boys are very ACTIVE enough without much of additives! ;p

Lebih Alami, Lebih Baik

Baking powder, baking soda, emulsifier, pewarna makanan, pasta perasa, MSG, kita sering dengar, kan?
Sejak aku belajar membuat kue aku makin sering dengar benda-benda ini. Kalau kata orang semakin banyak belajar, semakin bingung, itulah yang dialami aku, hehe. Tapi, mungkin ini bingung yang bagus, karena karena ketidakmengertianku mengantarkan aku untuk penasaran menemukan jawabannya. Apa yang aku bingungkan? Ok, aku sedikit tahu kalau mereka membantu mengembangkan, atau mewarnai, atau memberi rasa, atau mempertahankan agar kue tetap mengembang. Hmm..ok. Tapi..terbuat dari apakah mereka?
Sudah lama aku meragukan bahan makanan dan minuman instan. Aku perhatikan kok, aroma makanan yang satu dan yang lain mirip sekali. Lebih parah lagi aku merasai aroma minuman kemasan bisa sama sekali dengan aroma sabun cair untuk cuci tangan. Lalu penasaran mengalir ke label kemasan. Ya, memang ada zat pemberi aroma. Mungkin esens aroma untuk makanan dan untuk sabun berbeda (seharusnya sih), tapi aku memang nggak mengerti kode-kode zat sintetis ini. I'm no food expert.

Sejak aku punya anak aku lebih hati-hati lagi dengan pemilihan makanan. Aku kan, harus memberi makanan yang baik dan halal untuk anak-anakku, bukan? Sejak aku masih single pun, I never-ever trust instant baby food. I mean, what's good from those boxed food?
Pertama, coba lihat label kandungan bahan-bahan di kemasannya. Ups, maaf, coba lihat dulu judul makanannya, rasa strawberry? rasa pisang? Ok. Lalu lihat apakah ada pisang sungguhan di label kandungan bahannya? Nggak ada? Yang ada 'perasa pisang'? Pewarna 'pisang'? Nggak cuma makanan bayi, tapi juga makanan kemasan lainnya kan? It's a fake.(I raise my shoulders and open my hands, literally). So, what's good in those boxes, I have to ask again?
Kalau kita makan hanya untuk kesenangan, ok lah. Tapi, kalau mencari sehat, apalagi untuk anak-anak, apa ada yang kita cari itu dalam makanan tersebut? Lalu mereka mengklaim 'kan, kami menambahkan vitamin X, Y, Z dan DHA, bla bla whatever'. Ok. Apa sudah ditambahkan sesuai dengan porsi yang seharusnya? berlebihkah? Kurangkah? Kita nggak pernah tahu kan?
'Ya percaya saja kalau BPOM sudah merestui mereka beredar, maka makanan itu berarti sudah cukup baik'. Are you sure?
Kembali ke zat tambahan makanan. Ya memang bagi tukang kue pakai zat-zat ini sangat membantu menghemat waktu dan modal. Dengan bahan tersebut kita bisa mengocok telur lebih cepat mengembang, kue kelihatan lebih cantik karena tinggi, warna kue lebih menarik, dan kue bisa berasa aroma tertentu dalam waktu singkat.
Tapi, kalau kita mau penasaran sedikit, sebetulnya apa sih, isi bahan-bahan tersebut? Contohlah, emulsifier. Mari kita browse, itu gunanya internet, kan? Aku menemukan ini. Ternyata kita, terutama yang Muslim, juga mesti hati-hati dalam memilih bahan untuk makanan. Kalau penampakannya nggak seperti babi, bukan berarti nggak haram. Wkwkwkkkk, maaf ya kalau aku ngomong, atau ngetik, suka kejam bahasanya. Nah, daripada ragu, sebaiknya di-skip saja. Nggak usah pakai.
Sekarang masuk ke pewarna atau pasta perasa tambahan. Pasta strawberry. Apakah terbuat dari strawberry? Coba lihat gambar. Apakah ada 'buah strawberry' di label komposisinya?

Bagaimana dengan kepraktisan? Ya, tentu lebih praktis kalau kita ambil kemasan tepung berbumbu lalu bikin ayam goreng tepung untuk anak-anak. Rasanya, sudah pasti gurih dan enak. Coba cek bahan-bahan di labelnya, sudah pasti ada MSG. Ya, tentu pakai MSG karena kalau beli langsung jadi di gerai fastfood pun biasanya pakai MSG juga. Sudah banyak bahasan tentang MSG ya, salah satunya di sini. Meskipun masih ada kontradiktifnya antara yang mencapnya buruk dan yang tidak, tapi kalau ragu-ragu, lebih baik skip. Iya, kan?

I don't want to be a hypocrite. Aku juga masih makan kok, food additive. Lihat saja di blog ini aku masih pakai baking powder kadang-kadang, he he. Tapi ya itu, sejak punya anak aku merasa kalau kita memakan sesuatu, there should be something good in it. Bukan cuma sekedar kenyang. Jadi aku bukan sama sekali anti. Sometimes it's so inevitable. Tapi kita bisa menguranginya mulai dari rumah, kan? Kalau kita makan, pasti kadang di rumah, kadang di luar. Di luar kita mungkin tidak bisa membendung makanan-makanan yang bahannya nggak terlalu kita inginkan, karena kita nggak tahu persis proses memasaknya, apalagi resep makanannya. Makanya mungkin sebaiknya kita dampingi dengan makanan yang lebih baik di rumah. Semoga sih, seenggaknya bisa dapat 50-50, antara yang baik dan yang..er..kurang baik.
Anyway, again, I'm no expert. I'm just a mom whose trying to find good food for her kiddos.
Aku bermimpi, suatu hari bisa bikin kue-kue dan makanan yang lepas dari zat-zat yang nggak jelas. Makanya dimulai dari sekarang, resep-resepku akan kulabeli mana yang nggak pakai zat-zat tersebut dengan label 'additives-free'. Kita lihat nanti berapa banyak yang pakai, dan berapa banyak yang nggak. Bismillah...
